There are plenty of good free Kindle ebooks at Amazon. You are not going to get well-known ebooks for free unless you borrow them from the library (many libraries support Overdrive and you can queue for and borrow ebooks online w/ a valid library card and PIN). But there are lots of new author and indie author ebooks to get for free. Some only stay free for a day or two (especially ones that are standalone novels) so you need to check often. From the main Kindle eBooks page, choose Best Sellers, then choose Top 100 Free - here they are: Now click categories at the left to see the Top 100 Free in a category. I also use this site because it points out the latest free ebooks on Amazon (so this site helps me find new ones before they become non-free) To buy free Kindle books at Amazon you must have an Amazon account with a credit or debit card in the account settings (and your Kindle needs to be registered to the same account to read them).
Noisetrade is where musicians and writers can offer things for free. I have gotten some great indie music from them and a few good audiobooks. They also have lots of books, and everything is legal. You can, if you like leave a tip, but there are all free. take the time to browse the book and check out the music too
One good one I liked on Kindle is called "Cycles" by Lois D. Brown. The first book is free. The second one is not, but it's cheap. It's worth a read.
The good books aren't free, and the free books aren't good.
