Summer is right around the corner. So if you recently had a Brazilian keratin hair straightening treatment — or are thinking about getting one — you need to take steps to protect your hair from the summer sun, waves, and other potential hazards.
Sun and water can damage keratin treated hair, leading to faded color, split ends and a dry, brittle texture. Fortunately, your keratin treatment not only straightens your hair, but strengthens it as well. So heading into summer you already have an advantage over those people who don’t have this additional protection.
Still, you need to be careful. Keratin treatments are expensive. Diving into a chlorine pool or a salt water ocean can strip this treatment right out of your hair and leave it looking dehydrated and dull.
But there are plenty of ways you can protect your keratin treatment and leave it looking straight and lush long into the summer months.
Stay Out of the Sun
Spending too much time in the sun isn’t just bad for your skin, it also can wreak havoc on your hair. If you are in a location where there is a lot of bright, direct sun all summer long you will need to make an extra effort to avoid exposure to the sun as much as possible. Stay indoors or stick to the shade when you are outside.
You also can protect your hair by wearing a hat with a large brim whenever you venture outdoors.
Hydrate Your Hair
It’s important in the summer months that you give your hair the nourishment it needs, especially if you’ve had a keratin treatment. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to maintain your hair’s healthy glow.
Check the ingredient labels on the products you use to make sure they don’t include harmful sulfates, parabens, or sodium chlorine, which can threaten your hair’s health.
