A secondary hard drive should not have a OS installed on it, unless you are setting up a dual-boot system. Typically the primary hard drive is set as the master with the OS installed and appears as C:\ on Windows systems. The secondary drive is set as a slave and is formatted once installed in the system. It will typically appear as D:\. You also need to make sure that your computer BIOS recognizes the second drive after you install it, otherwise you'll need to check the jumpers, cabling or BIOS configuration. Adding a second drive for storage is the same as plugging in portable USB hard disk or flash drive. No software is needed, these are just used for storage of files. Good Luck.
No, it only needs to be formatted to work with your existing operating system.
Yes, you can place any files or folders you want on that drive with no OS installed. I have 2 extra drives in my PC that are used for storage only.
