Is it OK to take creatine only when sore?

Is it ok to take creatine only when you are sore and want a good lift? I'm sure you won't benefit from the temporary weight it will provide to you (depending on the person). But would it be OK to take it maybee once a week? If so, would you still need to cycle off of it?
