First answer gave good suggestions, but it is still unsafe. FAR better to use a cab and be far safer.
Walk confidently and strongly and fast and with a purpose. Look strong. Stand tall. That is very important, because people who mug or attack others tend to look for victims who look weak. Carry something in your hand that you can use as a weapon if you need to. One idea that I have seen suggested is to carry a set of keys in your hand, in your fist actually, and keep one key held tightly sticking out between your index and middle finger and if you have to defend yourself use it to go for the eyes. I know some women who carry a metal rod if they have to walk alone at night. Stick to well lit areas, even if it means walking farther. Tell someone when you head home and make sure that someone is expecting you - even if it means you have to call someone when you get home to let them know you have arrived. Keep your cell phone in one hand ready to call for help if you need to. You should have 911 entered as an "easy call" number. Or talk to someone on your cell phone as you walk.
