What's an elbow rest for on a bicycle? And how can I keep my fingers from going numb?

Stupid question, but in all my perusing of elbow rests online and searching for information, nothing tells me what one is actually FOR. I haven't been riding a bike for long. I just started a few weeks ago. After I rode it about 6.5 miles each time on three separate occasions, after the third time my pinky and ring fingers went numb. I let them normalize for about a week and a half and then only went about two miles one morning and they were numb all over again. My sister said to get an elbow rest, but before I go do that, I want to make sure that an elbow rest will even help me. I don't want to stop riding, but I don't know what to do. So, if not an elbow rest, can anyone suggest something that might help me so I can ride and not lose my fingers? Thank you.
Rock I think you are looking at a set of aero bars. They are NOt elbow rests. They allow,a rider to stay down in an aero position for a longer period, with less discomfort than staying down in the drop handle bars of a racing bike. You keep your hands from going numb by moving the pressure about d all the time. When it gets extreme you sit up, take a hand off the handle bar and shake it around. Soccerref
You are riding the wrong size frame. The handlebars are too low or too far away. You can change the stem and or bars. There are no elbow rests they are called aerobars. If the frame is the wrong size they can be worse then the bars. Aerobars are used on road bikes for racing.
