Deaf in hospital?

So I am researching about deafness and I have a question. Let's say someone had an extreme car wreck and it caused them to go deaf. While in the hospital, if they just woke from consciousness, how would the nurse or doctor tell them? Would it be weird for them to like hold up a piece of paper to say it?
That would likely be the way that a doctor would tell such patient the news. Although, depends on the case. the doctors may not know they are deaf until they are conscious. A doctor may also use common hand gestures such as "can you hear me" by pointing to the patient and then to their own ear, and then to themselves. Paper would be the easiest solution for the patient assuming they could read, knew the same language, and didn't suffer extreme brain damage.
