Help me find an English idiom?

Do you have any idiom in English you use when an organization dismisses its worker in order to dodge the organization's responsibility? Just for your information, in the Japanese language such conduct is often compared to a lizard detaching its tail to escape from predators. Do you use any similar metaphor in English?
One might be, "throwing them (the worker) under the bus." Basically sacrificing someone else to save your own reputation. Another might be making the worker the "scapegoat" or "sacrificial lamb" both of which means putting the blame on the worker and letting them suffer the termination.
The one I can think of is, "using the worker as a red herring"
