What happens to people in nursing homes?

My grandma when raising my mother and aunts struggled with some mental illness not much was ever said to me. We lived with her and my grandfather for portions of my life and I have always been close with my grandparents. So when I was born she was fine or "normal" she was a functioning person. About two years ago her sodium dropped and the doctors said they would periodically give her more, but they didn't they gave it all the next day. Since then she has been a different non functioning person. She's always nervous always calling for my grandpa, peeing the bed. There was a point she seemed a LITTLE better, she used the bathroom more. But I hear she's regressing really badly now she can't even walk and she won't use the bathroom at all. This is too much on my grandfather and uncle who have been taking care of her and they are talking of putting her in a home. What will happen to her there? She gets nervous and wants to be around someone I don't want her being alone and scared the remainder of her life. And I'm 16 I don't want to be visiting a nursing home and that makes me a bad grandson. And the bad thing is she's relatively young (66) so she probably has quite a bit of life left it's not like she'll be out of her misery soon
It will depend on what facility, and what her level of care is. Some places are like small hotels with their own rooms and a group dining room, others are more like low level hospitals. You will have to really see what happens. Visiting is not that bad.
