The fountain in the middle of a park is circular with a diameter of 16 feet. There is a walkway that is 3 feet wide that goes around fountain... What is the approximate area of the walkway? A- 179 ft B- 152 ft C- 28 ft D- 16 ft
The area of a circle is pi*r^2. If the diameter of the park is 16 feet then the radius is half of that or 8 feet. The radius of the walkway plus the circle is the 8 feet on the circle plus an additional three feet from the walkway, or 11 feet. Therefore, the area of the whole thing (walkway + park) is 121pi. The area of just the park is 64pi. Therefore, the area of the walkway is pi(121-64)=57pi which is about 179 feet. So the answer is A.
The fountain in the middle of a park is circular with a diameter of 16 feet. There is a walkway that is 3 feet wide that goes around fountain. What is the approximate area of the walkway? pi (R^2 - r^2) = pi(R + r)(R -r) = pi(11 + 8)(11 - 8) = 57 pi (sq. feet) Answer choice: A - 179 ft^2
