True Fans of a team?

Alright so my brother claims that he is a "real fan" of the Dallas Mavericks, but I don't believe him. Today I decided to call him on it, by giving him a basic quiz on the Mavs players. The only thing he got right was the name of two starters, Monta Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki. Suddenly he flipped things on me by calling me a bandwagon of the Miami Heat (favorite team). Unlike him I can actually name every player on the roster from starters to bench riders. So I ask you, what makes a true fan? Just supporting a team when they're in the playoffs, or actually knowing some deep facts about the team other than just the star players?
True fan means you supported the team before they were good and you'll continue to support them while they're bad. Do you know the names of players from the 2009 roster without looking it up? If not you're not a true Heat fan. I'm not from FL but I've been watching them since 03.
A true fan is somebody that sticks with their team though thick and thin
No I'm from Boston and are general rule here is if your a new englander and support the celtics you're a true fan because you were born into it even if you don't know every player. You stand by them no matter what even if their coach sucks and they lost all their good players and Rondo can't save them. I support Cetics Bruins Patriots and the Red Sox all the time even if I don;t see all their games that's a true fan.
