It stops if the temperature is high enough. Bypassing the thermostat will lead to fire. Make sure it is clean (commercial citric acid cleaner is best, but vinegar and lemon juice run through a couple times will help. It may be so plugged that getting it started will be hard). Make sure the heating plate is clean, too, because that is where the temperature sensor operates. Sometimes dried coffee there makes a heat sink that keeps the plate hot.
