I live all year NM and my wife lives in NY. She worked only 6 monthes and earned ~5000 and payed ~116 state tax. Can we efile our STATE tax returns as a married filing jointly? When I try to efile at FreeTaxusa.Com they ask "Did you live in New Mexico all year? " ... when it say YOU, Is it asking me or for both of us? Should we file separately? What is the easiest way to file?
You can still file jointly federally. Some states require you to file the same as federal and some do not. There are state credits to make sure you are not double taxed. You would be the primary person and spouse the other. Just like it says when you put the names in at the beginning.
